Learn its limitations and response on your machine, and you will cut lots of time off making a part.

Each machine has a personality and as machinists we learn how much to move the dial to get that last. Also as machinists we also know the tooling (its wear), the material, the lubricant or lack of it all change the dynamics of the a cut.
Nothing wrong with that, I find the machine much easier to use, just need to understand the limitations of the scales, readers, and electronics. You will certainly get there quicker, but just because the DRO says X you will likely not have it. I do not care what the manufactures tell you if you want a dimension X on the diameter you will be using your mic's all the time. Unless you are going to pay lots of $$ you will not be able to use the the crossfeed for anything more than getting close. Machine was just fine paint terrible, also put a taper attachment on it. I have had a 2 axis DRO on my 5904 Clausing since I tore it down and did a paint restore in 2003.
